Bee Ed.ucateD.
To celebrate Dr. Sean Woytek getting his Ed.D. from University of Pennsylvania our family embarked on a new adventure of bee keeping!

Bringing home the pollen!
Each day when we have a moment to walk through the orchard near the bees, we like to sit for a moment to observe the various colorful pollen that our bees are bringing home: pastel yellow, golden yellow, burnt orange, neon orange, rusty red, etc.

New comb!
During our weekly observations, we are able to see how busy bees have been hard at work making and adding new comb onto empty frames.

Bee vitamins
During our weekly observation, we sprinkled the vitamin powder onto the top of the frames. By the next day, the bees had already gobbled up the nutrients!

Hive Inspections
Noticing: Our beetle trap doesn’t seem to be working yet. It’s been there for one week and has trapped no beetles. During our inspection, we killed two hive beetles but found none caught in the trap. We will have to experiment with another type of oil or something to entice them to fall for the trap going forward.

Hive at Work
In just one week, our bees slurped up the entire sugar water bee food mixture! It was a really hot week, and they must have really needed the extra food for productivity.
We have seen the 'rainbow' of healthy bee production each week which tells us that our queen is alive and well.

Bee bearding
Serveral evenings as the temperatures have reached into the 100s our bees have kept cool by hovering into a beard outside the front of the hive.
